SĂ©jour Ă  Zanzibar (Matemwe)

Duration: 6 days

Period: All year

Matemwe is a fishing village on the northeast coast of Zanzibar. Its economy is mainly based on the cultivation and fishing of seaweed.

Matemwe beach is the longest beach in Zanzibar. It is affected by the tide which is high twice every 24 hours. The beach is very calm and, worldwide, Matemwe is particularly known for its relatively unspoiled white sand beaches. The village is bordered by a lagoon and a coral reef, as well as the small atoll of Mnemba, which is a particularly popular place for snorkeling and scuba diving. Many species of fish can be observed: giant jacks, trumpet fish, anthias, groupers and snappers.

The boat ride from Stone Town takes 20-30 minutes and the seas can get a bit rough at times. When arriving on the island, there is a mysterious rustic wooden bridge which hovers a few meters above the water, jumping into the sea and where you can go for a walk.

You can walk around the island around the old prison, but the biggest attraction is undoubtedly the colony of giant tortoises ! Visit their environment and discover these impressive turtles.
